Belinda Placing Blame in Alexander Popes The Rape of the Lock I will be examining lines 147-160 of Canto IV in The Rape of the Lock. In this selection, Belinda speaks in a monologue, apparently regretting past actions that have caused her the loss of her lock. However, it becomes clear that she is exaggerating her loss and the preventive measures she could have taken. By citing radical changes that would have been necessary to prevent the occurrence, she makes it clear that it is very difficult for a woman to escape men. In this manner, she is able to lay most of the blame for the rape of the lock on the nature of men rather than her own vain lifestyle. In lines 149-150 she says that she would be ten times happier now if she had never even seen Hampton Court. These first four lines introduce the mood of the passage, with Belinda implying that she regrets having l ived life the way she has. By saying Hampton-Court these Eyes had never seen! (Pope IV. 150) she implies regret at having spent time at Hampton-Court and her actions there. This lock may symbolize her virginity, which indeed was of great pride and value to women of the day. Had she known that this opulent lifestyle would lead to the loss of her lock, or metaphorically, the loss of her virginity through rape, she may have lived a more modest life. In lines 150-151 Belinda is no longer solely blaming herself as she goes on to suggest that she is not completely at fault for what has transpired. She makes the observation that she is not in any way the first woman to have ever made the mistake of trusting men. Many other young virgin women before her have also been lured by the love of the courts, popularity, and the social life only to be betrayed in various ways. In lines 153-154 she speaks of how she would rather have not been admired and sought after and instead lived secluded in some distant northern land or island. My Passion for Dancing Essay I enter the stage, head down, not looking into the audience. I gulp, swallowing hard to breathe in breathe out. Its almost show time. Its, Go hard, or go home. There is no turning back. The lights come on, and that means its time to hit every move. My body trails gracefully across the stage. All I hear are the chants and cheers from the audience. The sounds drive me forward, and they want more. I don’t need to see, to know where I am going. I keep thinking of each step in my head, and all I hear is the rhythm, â€Å"Boom cat Boom cat. The song ends, and I open my eyes to see that I am great. All the applause shows me that this is what I am destined for. Dancing on a stage in the presence of an audience makes me go to a different level. My world is clear again. All my life, I have had faith in one passion, and that is dancing. I have been dancing since I could walk, and professionally for a little over twelve years. Dance is my outlet in life. I have been through so many things that people cannot even imagine. The joy dancing brings me, lights many flames in my heart. I am experienced in many types of dance, hip hop, praise dancing, classical, tap, and other styles. With every style of dance, I discover, and convey a new emotion. I believe that dance is like a person with different genres and feelings. My first experience with dance was brought in through the stage presence. At my church, we put on different talent shows. Every year, we get a big stage and allow all the teens in to church to bring their talents. That was my time to show what Ive got. That was my very first time ever performing on a stage, and i couldnt get enough. When I enter a stage, I always have butterflies in my stomach. I have to allow the dance to come alive, so I always give it all I got. The stage is a place where all my problems just go away. The best part of being on stage, is the lights. When those lights come on, it’s like Im Ciera or Lil Mama. The lights gives the stage a different feel, because all of the attention is on you. When the lights are on you must bring it, like you are on a dancing show, or if scouts are looking at you. Lights enhance a performance even more, making me throughly enjoy my dancing outlet. The boy wanted to thank the lady but before he did, the lady closed the gate. This short story will be very memorable for me, because instead of the lady turning in the boy to the police, she instead took him with her. She understood the boy for trying to steal her purse, and she forgave him in a different manner without saying anything (for ex. feeding him food and giving him water to wash his face). The boy was confused throughout the whole time in her house, because she left the door open and her purse out in the open. He had many chances of escaping, but he didnt. He preferred to give her trust as the same way she gave him. I liked this story a lot because there was a lot of trust and a lot love. 1. â€Å"Thank You, Ma’m† was written by Langston Hughes in 1958. The story is about a young teenage boy, Roger, who attempts to steal a large purse from a large woman, Luella Bates Washington Jones. The purse is too much for him to handle and after he loses his footing, he is in the grasps of Luella. Luella immediately recognizes that the boy has little to no looking after at his home. She carries his by his neck, to prevent escape, to the house she lives at to clean him up and give him something to eat. When they reach Ms. Jones’ house, which appears to be filled with other tenants, the boy washes his face while Luella cooks dinner. While cooking Roger admits that he wanted to steal her purse to buy himself a pair of blue suede shoes. Ms. Jones admits that when she was younger had done similar things in pursuit of similar objects. Over dinner they talk about Luella’s job and other light subjects, but Luella does not pry into Roger’s life as the reader may assume she would. After dinner Luella sends Roger on the way very abruptly. Roger has barely enough time to say, â€Å"’Thank you, Ma’m’ before she shut the door.
